A missile attack by Yemen's Houthi rebels that damaged a Belize-flagged ship traveling through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait that connects the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden has forced the crew to abandon the vessel, authorities said Monday. Another ship reportedly came twice under attack in the Gulf of Aden.

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed that the Yemeni forces targeted MV Star Nasia, a Marshall Island-flagged, Greek-owned-and-operated bulk carrier transiting the Gulf of Aden.

In a video press conference on 4 January 2024 Vice Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of US Naval Forces Central Command, US 5th Fleet and Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), gave a positive assessment of Operation ‘Prosperity Guardian’, which was launched by the US military to protect merchant ships in the Red Sea region.
