Georgia celebrates granting EU candidate status. European Union flags fly in the streets and on different buildings in Tbilisi and countrywide.

A public celebration on this occasion is being held at Freedom Square in Tbilisi.

The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili, invited the public to Freedom Square today to celebrate the historic fact of granting the country candidate status.

On December 14, the European Council opened EU accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova and granted EU candidate status to Georgia.

The European Commission recommended the European Council grant candidate status to Georgia on November 8.

Georgia officially applied for EU membership on March 3, 2022.
