A Royal Navy warship has shot down a suspected drone that was fired at merchant ships navigating the Red Sea.

This marks the first time in decades that the Royal Navy has engaged and destroyed an airborne threat in combat.
According to Grant Shapps, it is suspected that the intended target of this incident in the Red Sea was merchant shipping, making it the most recent incident on this critical global shipping route.

The Red Sea, which lies between North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, is an important passageway that connects the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean via the Suez Canal.

Mr Shapps announced: "One Sea Viper missile fired and successfully destroyed the target,

"The ship recently arrived in the region to bolster international efforts to maintain maritime security.

"The recent spate of illegal attacks represent a direct threat to international commerce and maritime security in the Red Sea.

"The UK remains committed to repelling these attacks to protect the free flow of global trade."

The US military recently revealed that the Unity Explorer, registered under the Bahamas flag and owned by a UK company, was one of three commercial vessels attacked by Houthi rebels with ties to Iran, writes the british Express.
